We want to create schools where every student feels that he or she is good at something and can develop personal interests.
Athletics
There are many positives of sound athletic programs, the ability to teach the important values of respect, responsibility, fairness and discipline. If school programs have a proper emphasis on such values, athletes learn one of the most essential of sports lessons, how to handle “success with grace” and “failure with dignity”. Sports activities have even more to teach children. The concept of teamwork, of sacrificing individual needs to work together in seeking a common goal, is one of the great teaching points of team sports. In addition, the concept of working hard for a specific goal, of putting in the necessary time to be able to do a task well, is another great lesson for children. Ultimately, sports can teach children of the need to prepare oneself for possible success, that the willingness to prepare to excel at a task is far more important than the desire to excel.

Music
Nearly everyone enjoys music, whether by listening to it, singing, or playing an instrument. But despite this almost universal interest, many schools have done away with their music education programs. This is a mistake, with schools losing not only an enjoyable subject, but a subject that can enrich students’ lives and education. Music education is so important, offering benefits even beyond itself.
Students who have early musical training will develop the areas of the brain related to language and reasoning. Playing a musical instrument can build pride and confidence. Music can keep kids interested and engaged in school.

Visual Arts
It appears that with the LCFF there is an increasing recognition that things need to shift – that the priorities that districts value need to encompass more of what really determines student success and that the arts are increasingly playing an important role in that conversation. P.S. ARTS is an organization in Southern and Central California that provides yearlong arts education in dance, visual arts, music, and theater arts to every child in a school during the regular school day. Without these programs, children in these underfunded school districts would not have access to the arts.

Performing Arts
Drama education contributes to a student's physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development, improves clarity and creativity in communication, and deepens understanding of human behavior, culture, and history. It uses the elements of theater -- costume, scenery, music, etc -- to enrich the learning experience. Drama learning may include pantomime, storytelling, radio/tv production, puppetry, public speaking, and play productions. Avenal Elementary is receiving funding and teacher professional development through the National Turnaround Arts Program. Students produced the Willy Wonka Musical. At one time, it was traditional for every class to present a dramatic performance each year. If we return to this practice, all RSUSD students will again receive the multiple benefits of drama!
